ENTERTAINMENT AT ST. ANDREWS.

The people of St. Andrews celebrated the opening of the now school yesterday, when a tea, concert, and dance took place. A special train conveyed the Timarnites, of whom about 30 availed themselves of the opportunity of taking a run out of town. A plentiful anil inost appetising tea had been prepared in the railway goods shed, the use of which had been granted for the occasion, and about 130 people partook of the good things, the tables being presided over by the following ladies : —No. 1, Mesdames J. Hurt and Stawell ; No. 2, Misses Young and Irvine; No. 3, Mrs Leavers and Miss Shave ; No, 4, Mrs Martin and Miss Allan. The concert took place in the school room, Mr Hammond presiding, and the various songs, readings, and recitations rendered by local amateurs, assisted by others from Timaru, were all highly appreciated. Messrs J. d. Kennedy and A. G. Stone supplied the comic element in their usual style, and it is needless to say contributed not a little to the success of the entertainment, Mr Statham presided at the pianoforte in an efficient manner, and his patience was rather severely tested by the frequent encores which greeted the songs, and to which he had to supply the instrumental accompaniments. Dancing followed the concert, and was kept up with much spirit.
