At Dunedin Inst evening after the declaration of the poll. Air II.S. i’isli, jnnr., the defeated candidate for the Mayoralty, made a furious and frantic speech. Tbc following, which wo quote from' the “Otago Daily Times” are some of the gems : \Vitb the tuo morning oapers against me, with the foul scurrilous abuse that has been flung a t jno (“ Qli !”_) —with tbc anonymous stab of the slanderer —the man who was afraid to put his name to print—the stab of the man —(Interruption; —it would have been more Hum wonderful if I bad been returned upon the present occasion. I do not envy my opponent—(“Ob, o ], <> ; l r>; —tbc honor of bis position, considering tbc means by which lie got it (Hisses.) Gentlemen, I can assure you, although I do not suppose there are many in the crowd here who believe it, that after the first few minutes’ disappointment that I experienced, I really think you have done mo a (rood turn. bear.”) The verdict of the citizens to-day will enable me to pay that amount of attention to my private affairs which I am perfectly certain will conduce very much to my own profit. Gentlemen, I may toll this—although I may bo by your verdict to-day scotched, I am'by no means killed, — (Hear, hear.) Ami, although I may retire from the publie arena for some time with God s blessing (“ Ob! ob! and uproar.) Aly good friends, let me earnestly implore you not to injure your throats by bowling unnecessarily. I say, gentlemen, with God’s blessing—(‘ Ob !Ob !”) of good health and strength, and a fan amount of prosperity, I tell you this distinctly, that you will hear of Air Fish again, and the lime will come when those who join in the rabble, and jeer at me will fling their caps in the air and say “ Hurrah for Eish !”
