The Quarterly Licensing Court for the Temuka district will be held at the E.M. Court, Temuka, at 12 o’clock noon, on Dec 7.

At a meeting of the local shareholders of the Permanent Building Society of Otauo held at the of lice of Mr Ziosler, manager of the Timaru branch, on Nov 1, the following local directors were appointed-Messrs fi. G. Kerr, Jas Granger, W. Moody, 11, 11. Taylor and T. IV. Pvt'e.

Instructions have been given to the Deputy Commissioner to take immediate proceedings against all persons who have failed to make a statement of their property under the “Property Assessment Act.” We understand that prompt effect is to be given to these instructions.

At a special meeting of the Committee of the Mechanics’ Institute held yesterday, a sub-committee was appointed to examine the Institute accounts and to prepare the annual report to be presented at the annual meeting on Nov. 2(1. It was resolved to ask Messrs Zicslerand Smith to act as auditors for the year and also that the sum of £lO be paid to the Secrtary as part compensation for the loss of his personal belongings by the late tire and that, at the same time, the thanks of the Committee be combed to him for his ready assistance in saving the Society’s property.

The (Jovcrnment having placed the Timaru Cemetery under the provisions of “ The Cemeteries Management Act, 1870,” the following persons have been appointed under the second section of the same to be trustees for the maintenance and care of the cemetery : —Messrs J. H. Sutter, J. Hamilton, T. L. Harney, J. Jackson, F. Archer, A. Ormsby, H. Belticld, and M. Jonas.

The public-houses in town which were closed by order of the Bench yesterday, drove a roaring business, and in the evening several of them were crowded. At the 11. M. Court this morning, before 11. Beetham Esq E. M. John Me Dermott was charged with assaulting George Anderson at Saltwater Creek. The charge was originally one of robbery with violence, but this was withdrawn, and one of simple assault substituted. After hearing the evidence of the complainant and one witness, which was of a very mixed up description, his Worship dismissed the case, at the same time cautioning the defendant as to his future conduct. From the representations of the complainant to the police when he first interviewed them, they were led to believe that a serious offence had been committed.

Handicap takes place this even, ing at 8 o’clock at the Grosvenor Buildings. The “Irish Pilgrim” will deliver his amusing lecture on “ The Early days of the Goldfields ” at 8 p.m., at the Theatre Royal. The lecture is for the benefit of the Mechanics’ Institute, and apart from the excelleuce of the object, we can assure such of our readers as may feel disposed to patronise it, that they will have a really capital entertainment.
