THE MISSING MAN IN REPLY.

[to the editor.] Sir, —I see hy your morning contemporary that the sensational “missing man” has found his way to Timaru. and that the police have been told off to watch for a dead body at the Breakwater. Perhaps the following facts will throw some light on the subject. Yesterday afternoon about 4 o’clock I was walking on the breakwater, when going too near the end, I had the good luck to be drenched. While beating a retreat, I was accosted by a man, who I presume to be the author of the “ missing one.” He excitedly asked me what had become of the person who accompanied me, and on my replying that I had no companion, he insisted that I had, and went so far as to describe the nails in his boots, and to insinuate that I knew more than I cared to explain. Believing that the poor fellow was suffering from a hallucination, I went away leaving him to pursue his search. If any accident occurred I was the victim of it; but fortunately I was only drenched, not drowned. PATRICK O’HALLOJvAN. Timaru Nov. 2.
