F The ship Glenora from London with thirty passengers has arrived at Auckland > after a passage of 82 days from port to port. An exhibition, which was offensive rather than funny, is stated to have taken place in one of the church bazaars last evening Two overgrown infants, in the disguise of youths, amused themselves for a time by carrying round a highly flavored mongrel on their shoulders, to the intense annoyance of the lady stall-keepers and other, visitors. Dog-mixture at a public meeting is usually voted a nuisance, but at a church bazaar it is certainly an infringement of the good manner which ought to characterise the intellectual puppy.

At the Christchurch Supreme Court on Monday, the case of Hoddinot v. Barrett was heard before His Honor Mr Justic e Johnston and a special jury. The plaintiff sought to recover £SOO ordinary and £2OO special damages for the defendant having left open and unprotected a trench in Manchester street whilst making the tramway, whereby the plaintiff, who was riding a horse along Colombo street, was thrown into the trench and suffered considerable injury. The plaintiff alleged that the illness thus caused, has caused him to lose his position in the Government service as a telegraphist. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for £415.

The Alexandra Lodge, T.O.G.T, resumed its meetings and business yesterday evening in theEechabite Hall. D.D.G.W.C.T. Bro. Walcot took the chair, and congratulated the Lodge on its revival. He said he was certain it would succeed, now that the secessionists had cleared out, and there was ample room for a strong Lodge at the south side of Timaru. Two members were admitted by clearance, and next Thursday was appointed for the .election and installation of the officers for the ensuing quarter. Mr Moore, as a member of the preliminary committee for establishing temperance entertainments and coffee-rooms was present, and explained that the object of the committee was to provide by means of a co-operative association, a a suitable place where working men could spend their evenings with comfort, and free from the temptations of drinking retreats.

Considerable surprise has been expressed at the fact that although Timaru has several old established breweries, and ale and porter figured in the prize list, no awards have apparently been made at the recent Agricultural and Pastoral Show. The facts, so far as we have been able to ascertain are as follows:—The Phoenix Brewery Company, Messrs Cubbitt and Co. bottling agents, and Messrs Annett and Edmiston forwarded samples of ale and porter in bulk and bottle and paid the entrance fees, amounting to 255, in the usual way. On the afternoon of the Show, on enquiring what had become of the awards, they had the mortification to be curtly informed that the judges of beer had had their palates so disorganised by the butter and cheese they had tasted, that they were quite unable to proceed with the brewers’ samples. The exhibitors are naturally indignant at the way they have been treated, and it is suggested that as the Agricultural Association have plainly broken their contract by taking the entrance money and awarding no prizes, the 25s should be handed over to the Timaru hospital.

Another of those grand periodical shows of meat that distinguish Messrs Peacock and Geaney’s West End Butchery has been on view this afternoon, and will be continued this evening. The spacious shop has been dressed with the fat. of the land arrayed with artificial flowers and other decorations in the highest style of the butcher’s art. Some fine carcases of oxen occupy a central position. They are part of the celebrated stock of the late J. Landsborough, and they testify with rolls of fat, judiciously mixed with lean, to the quality of the pastures and the favorable character of the season. There is also on view a large number of prime lambs and porkers of all sizes, besides the usual display of choice mutton, beef, and veal. The small goods window is a picture worth photographing, and a glance at it is enough to drive a hearty appetite into a sick headache, [Advt.] A meeting of the shareholders of the Permanent Building Society of Otago will take place at Mr Zicslcr’s office on November!, at Bp.m.
