Charitable Institutions.
These are numerous, hut by some inexplicable paradox they do not seem sufficient for the demands made upon public charity. There are 33 general hospitals, besides lying-in, eye and ear, and children’s hospitals. Then there is a Blind Asylum, a Deaf and Dumb Asylum, and an Immigrant’s Home. There are 5 Benevolent Asylums, 7 Orphan Asylums, 9 Industrial and Keformatory Schools, 5 Hospitals for the Insane, and 5 Female Kefuges. Up to the end of 1878 these institutions received 28,277 inmates. The total receipts were £313,071, of which the Government contributed £230,919. The expenditure amounted to £303,553. There are 37 other associations for the relief ot distressed or indigent persons.
