At the end of 1879, the returns showed that there were 149 flour mills, operating upon 5,66 >,7 ji bushels of wheat, and producing 120, 000 tons of flour; 102 breweries, producing 15,371,000 gallons of beer; 198 brickyards, from which were issued 60,000,000 bricks, and pottery, valued at £-o,UUU; 118 tanneries and fellmongeries, producing goods worth £1,240,000 ; 9 woollen mills, using 1,/SO.OOOIbs. of wool, and making 1,000,000 yards of tweed, cloth and flannel, 22,000 yards of felt, 3000 blankets, and 378 shawls; 61 stationery and hook factories; 9 manufactories of musical instruments; 11 prmts and pictures; 23 carving and figures; 6 design dies and medals; 7 philosophical instruments; 6 surgical instruments; 14 arms and ammunition; machines, tools and implements; 188 carriages and harness; 25 ships and boats; 25 houses and buildings, etc.; 66 furniture; 38 chemicals; 167 dress; 16 fibrous materials; 38 annual food: 36 vegetable food; 160 drinks and stimulants ; 104 animal matters; 389 vegetable matters; 17 in coal; 46 stone, clay, earthenware and glass; 2 in water; 34 gold, silvei and precious stones, and 177 in other metals than gold and silver. The total number of manufactories in the colony is 2343, of which 908 use steam-engines, the total horse-power of which is 13,064, and 33,278 hands are employed. The approximate value of land, buildings, machinery, etc. is £6,800,000.
