Art, Literature, and Science.

The art feeling of the Victorian people is remarkable. Nor is their interest in the more solid, but no less fascinating, pursuits of science less distinctive. Artists and scientific men visiting this colony have been surprised at the general enthusiasm exhibited by the public in these directions. Our Public Library is almost unique. Our collections of pictures and statuary is more than respectable; while science has its representatives in numerous professors paid by the State. The Public Library cost £111,604. The building is still incomplete. There are 221,614 books on its shelves. In 1878 it was visited by 2,600,000 persons. The National Art Gallery contains upwards of 100 oil paintings, many of which are very superior; 180 objects of statuary, 6040 sketches, drawings, &c., and any amount of water-colour paintings. The Museum, industrial and technological, is very complete. Class lectures in chemistry and mineralogy are given by professors, and largely attended. In connection with the art gallery, there are schools of painting and drawing, of which advantage is taken by our rising Titians and Claudes,
