LATE CABLE NEWS.

[Bv Telegraph.]

(Per s.s. Eotomahana, at the Bluff.) (“ Argus ” Special.”) GLADSTONE’S POLICY UPHELD. DISGUSTED IRISH LANDLORDS. PROPOSED DEPOSITION OF THE SULTAN. London, Oct. 6, The public meetings called in opposition to Gladstone's foreign policy have been miserable failures. It is understood that Franco adheres to the European concert in relation to the affairs of Turkey. Ayoub Khan, about whom so little has been heard since his defeat has arrived at Herat. Afghanistan is quiet. Oct 9. A hundred Irish landlords have waited on the Viceroy (Earl Cowper), and threatened to abdicate their functions as guardians in connection with the public boards if the Government is unwilling to afford them protection. Oct. 8. It is stated with some degree of authority that the British Government has proposed to the Great Powers, with the view of expediting the settlement of the Eastern difficulty, that the combined squadron should at once prodeed to occupy and place an embargo on the principal ports in the /Egean Sea. It is further stated that the Powers have agreed to the proposal, and that instructions have alrea'ly been sent to the Admirals to the above effect. The “ Daily News,” in a leading article published this morning, hints that the advisability of deposing the Sultan will probably be considered by the Powers.
