S. C. Times Office. _ Monday Evening. Mr Moss' Jonas reports for the week ending October 16 : Stock —There is a marked improvement in the tone of the market. Cattle—The demand for both stores and fat cattle is more lively, and several lots have been placed privately at satisfactory ? rices. At the South. Canterbury yards on 'hursday, the following prices were obtained:—Cows in full profit, from £7 10s to £lO ; cows in calf, £6 10s to £8 ; springing heifers, £7 to £8; heifers, eighteen months old, £3 10s; calves, eight months old, £1 12s 6d. Horses—At Messrs Sealy’s sale on Saturday the attendance was large, and the competition brisk, heavy draught mares and geldings fetching from £3B to £ls; medium draughts, from £22 to £26. The drays sold at from £ll to £l6, and for farming implements and harness fair prices were secured. Wool and Skins.—A most successful sale of wool and skins was held on Wednesday last. A large lot of skins were catalogued, and the competition was exceptionally keen. Medium crossbred skins were sold at from 4s 6d to 6s, while inferior qualities ranged from 2s Id to 3s lOd. Wool in bales (inferior quality), 7|d; hides, 3d to 3£d; tallow, to 2M. Grain, Produce, &c. —Barley : 37-1 sacks of somewhat inferior quality was disposed of at 5s 3d per sack, sacks given in. Fowls’ eorn : Supply in excess of demand and lower rates ruling. Flour : Standard brands £8 to £9. Bran, 3s 6d to 4s, and sharps, 6s to 7s per sack. Potatoes, 3s to 4s per fi ck, and supply very much exceeding demand. Messrs Wildie, Allan, and Stumbles report for the fortnight ending Saturday as follows: — Fat Cattle —The market is well supiilicd. Our transactions since October 1 comprise 85 head, viz., 22 at £9 10s, 3 at £8 10s, 7 at £8 10s, 2 at £7 10s, and 1 at £0 17s 6d. These were sold privately and by auction at Pleasant Point. They would give an average of about 22s Od per 1001 b. Store Cattle. —There is a very active demand for stores of all ages. Our transactions at Winchester Fair and Pleasant Point have been 37 steers and heifers, as follows, viz.:—s two-years-old, at £5; 5 15 to 18 months, £2 17s 6d ; 10 18 months to 2 years, £4 ; 1 three-year-old, £6 ; 8 12 to 18 months, £2 15s; and 8 yearlings, £2 ss. Sheep.—We have sold during the past fortnight 220 fat crossbreds at 14s, and 20 fat crossbred wethers at 16s.
Horses.—At our opening sales, held this day, we had a large entry of all lands, from hacks to heavy draughts. The sale was well attended, with fair demand. We succeeded in selling 8 draught marcs and geldings, comprising medium to heavy sorts, at the following rates, viz :—.£27, £3!), £2(l, £2B, £26 £3l, £3B, and £3l. 1 timber truck, at £25. Hacks and light harness horses, at £6, £7, £lO, to £l-1. Harness, plough, drays, &c., realised fair prices. Messrs William "Collins and Co., report a largo attendance at their regular market and sale by auction on Saturday. Groceries and Drapery—We quitted a largo portion of the entries at owners’ instructions. We quote —Flour (all faults), £7 ; quality guaranteed, £lO ; bran, 60s ; sharps, 65s ; potatoes, 30s a ton, bags given in ; onions (Victorian), a prime sample, lid per lb ; locally grown are unsaleable at any price. Fresh butter (5 cwt entered) brought 4d per lb ; cheese, 3d to 4£d ; rolled bacon, 5d per lb ; fowls, 3s to 4s 6d per pair. A consignment of groceries we quitted at the following rates —White sugar, 41 d per lb ; brown 4d ; tea, 16s to 17s per box ; jams, 6s Od per doz ; soap, 14s to 17s per cwt ; rice, 20s per owt ; currants, 5s per lb. A quantity of men’s, boys, and youths’ clothing, boots, and tweeds were with dillioulty placed at vendors’ reserves.
