MAGISTERIAL.

TIMARU—THIS DAY.

(Before Messrs F. LeCren and E. G. Sterriker, J.P.’s.) DRUNKENNESS. James Burns was charged with being drunk and disorderly. It was shown that the accused was in a helplessly intoxicated state yesterday and had to be removed to the lock-up in an express van. He now pleaded very hard to be let off, stating that he had work to go to, and that he had a wife and family to support. The Bench said j that it would deal leniently with him on this occasion. He would be fined 10s and 2s costs or in default be imprisoned for 48 hours. Should he come before the Court again, however, lie would not get off quite so easily. FAMILY JARS. An old couple made their appearance in court, whose united ages might have amounted to about 150. The wife charged her husband with assaulting her yesterday. In reply to the Bench she said that she wont in constant fear of her husband, he had so frequently threatened her life. He had been drinking heavily lately. The poor woman, who seemed faint and ill, was greatly affected in giving her evidence.

Inspector Pender stated that nothing was known against the accused. It would be necessary to ask for an adjournment, in order that they might secure the attendance of a certain witness.

The accused was thereupon remanded until Monday next. The Court then adjourned.
