[Peu “Times” Special TVike.] li. “ Stum ” decision. Tauraxga, August 30. An important case rc the supplying of intoxicants to the natives in the outlying districts has been heard
at Ohinemutn, under the Act of 1879. Inspector Emerson conducted the ease, and proved that one Higby, a stmekeeper at Taurangn, sold the natives 15 gallons of rum, to ho delivered at Ohinemutn. Tho magistrate gave his decision in favor of the defendant upon the grounds that the rum was purchased at Taurangn, which is not an outlaying district and Higby as carrier was not liable. It is now understood by tho Natives that they can purchase spirits in any town in the North Island and have it delivered in the outlying districts in any quantity. Inspector- Emerson, intends at next licensing meeting to object to all wholesale licenses in the Taaranga district.
Violent Assault. Christchurch, August 30. At the Magistrate's Court to-day James McDonald was committed fmtrial at tho Supremo Court for assaulting Houston on the South Belt with intent to rob. Soup ISltcbons. The number relieved by the Benevolent Association for tho past week was 48. This is the smallest weekly nubmer yet recorded.
