[Per “Times” Special Wire.l Insurance Appointment. Auckland, August 28. At the last meeting of the auditors of the South British Insurance Company, Mr Johnson, who has been performing the chief duties during Mr Boardman's absence, was appointed to the permanent managership. Presentation. His Worship the Mayor, on behalf of a deputation of citizens, presented the Town Clerk, Mr P. A. Phillips,with a purse of sovereigns. Wandering Stars. Among the through passengers by the mail steamer Australia for Sydney were Herr Bandman, actor, Miss Louise Bardett, actress, M. Kawalski, the eminent pianist, Miss Boyes, soprano, from the Conservatoir of Milan, and Billy Sweetman negro comedian. The Christohureh £ihsl Case. Christchurch, August 28. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, William White Fraser, Joseph Carnahan, and Samuel Johnston, proprietors of the “ Echo” were charged with committing a libel on James Izett, editor of the “ Star.” The alleged libel was contained in an answer to a correspondent in the “ Echo,” which was said to contain a serious reflection on the prosecutor’s private charade". Accused were committed to take their (rial at the Supremo Court, hut were liberated on their own recognizances of £IOO end). A Suicide’s Victim. A public appeal is being made for subscriptions for Mrs Henderson, widow of the notorious Mathew Henderson. She is left totally unprovided for. The Rev. E. A. Lingard is taking a leading part in the matter. Hospital Enquiry. Wellington, August 28. The inquiry into the present administration of affairs at the Wellington Hospital, was continued yesterday. The evidence, so far, is in favor of the officials. The enquiry was adjourned until this afternoon. Melbourne Exhibition. A letter has been received by the Secretary of the New Zealand Commission of the Melbourne Exhibition to the effect that all gentlemen who are cither members of the Legislative Committee, or wlio belong to the New Zealand Commission for the Melbourne Exhibition, will be entitled to free passes to the Exhibition, and visitors free passes over the Government lines of railway upon their arrival in Victoria. Death of a Parmer. Oamauu, August 2S. A farmer named George Straghan was killed yesterday at Windsor. A team of horses bolted and threw deceased from the dray, the wheel of which passed over his head. Death was instantaneous.
