COACH ACCIDENT.

On Saturday morning Mr TisclTs coach from Alford Forest to Mcthvcn got washed away in attempting to cross the North Ash burton River at the Pudding Hill ford. It appears that the coach started with the mails as usual at about 0.30. On getting to the river it was found that there was a very strong current running, but the driver judged that it would not be sullicient to prevent his attempting to get over. The stream, however, proved too powerful, and soon after entering the river, coach and horses were carried forcibly before it. The driver managed to stick to his scat for some time, until one of the wheels striking a boulder, the coach turned over, and he was thrown off. The pole of the coaeli breaking, the horses were able to get free and reached the bank in safety. For some time the driver managed to cling to the wreck of the coach, which was carrried rapidly down stream. At length he was most fortunately brought up by the bridge, on to which he was hauled in a very exhausted state, by some of the people about. Had not his progress been thus arrested, he most certainly would have been drowned. The coach, it is almost superfluous to say, was completely smashed up, and the mails had not at latest advices been recovered.—“ Ashburton Mail.”
