HOW DR. TANNER FASTED.

We published a cable message recently to the effect that Dr Tanner, a New York physician, had fasted for 40 days. The Alta California gives the following information concerning him, dated 21st June:—To-day the condition of Dr tanner, who is attempting to fast 00 days, is unchanged except for a slight increase in the pulse, lie arose at half past six after a night of broken slumber, and took a bath before he dressed. The attending physicians made a thorough examination of his clothing, in order that there should be no food concealed. In appearance the doctor resembles a ‘ go-as-yon-pleusc ’ pedestrian who has been pushed to his utmost. Ilis eyes are sunken slightly, and his face has a worn expression although he is very strong. At noon to-day he begun the Jifth day of his task. His pulse was higher and more irregular, ranging from 80 to 00 ; temperature normal. The attendance was greater than on the previous days. In the morning many women were present. The interestjmanit'estcd by the physicians has increased. Dr Tanner has abstained from drinking water since Wednesday night. He spends his time lying in a cot or sitting in a chair, lie did not sleep a a wink, as usual, yesterday, and in the afternoon walked to Fourth Avenue and Thirteenth street, where ho was weighed, and his weight was l-ITllbs, a decrease of lOlbs, since he began his fast.
