THE PUBLIC ESTATE.

The following extract from a return laid on the table of the House shows the acreage of bind alienated and the cash received for it in each provincial district since the formation of the colony :

Canterbury .. .. 5,350,725 Otago 238,800 Southland .. .. 1,518,005 Auckland .. .. 2,513,803 .Hawke’s Bay .. .. 05,518 Wellington .. .. 27,721 Nelson .. .. 585,008 Marlborough .. .. 2,150,305 Westland .. .. 215,500 Taranaki .. .. 11,307 The return of land held under depasturing and other leases (except for mining), and of rents paid for the year ending Dec. 31, 1879, shows that in the whole Colon}' the land held for depasturing purposes is 12,025,913 acres; agricultural leases, 10,772 acres; mineral and other purposes, 5517 acres; total rents and assessment, £118,501. A summary of the land sold for cash or money scrip during 1879 shows for the whole colony 85,571 acres, for which the total cash received -was £110,717. During (he same period under deferred payments, 08,130 acres were granted, and 32,099 acres were forfeited.
