At a meeting oil the unemployed this morning a letter was read from the men on strike at the Waimakariri railway works, stating that the promises made by the Government were not being fulfilled, either as regards wages or rations. It was resolved to telegraph to the City members, and to petition the Governor, suggesting that a committee of enquiry be appointed. A Bereaved Captain. Mrs Elizabeth Martin lias been received into the Hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound. Her son, ten years of age, was playing with a loaded gun, which accidentally discharged, and the shot entered the lower portion of her back. X'atal Explosion. It is rumored that an explosion has occurred at Mullocky Gully, by which one man has been killed, and another seriously wounded. A French lady, having lost her husband, married bis brother. She kept the portrait of the first in the diningroom, and when a guest asked her if it was a picture of one of her relations, she replied, “Yes; my poor brothcr-iu-law.”
