MAGISTERIAL.
TIMAEU—THIS DAY. (Before H. Bel field, Esq... and B. VYoollcombc, Esq., J.P’s.) VAOIiAXCY. Tbos. Alpine, a miserable looking man, was charged with having no lawful visible means of support. Detective Kirby deposed to the arrest of the accused on this charge. He was a loafer, and had been found sleeping in stables and all kinds of places. The accused pleaded that he had slept at Cornelius’ stable, but that he had been employed by Mr Cornelius, and therefore had a right on the premises. Were Mr Cornelius present he would confirm this statement.
A constable was then despatched for Mr Cornelius, and soon returned stating that he had refused to come to the Court as he knew nothing of the case. Alpine had never done a hand’s turn of work for him.
Inspector Pender here remarked that the police had no wish to press the charge, but the accused was in the habit of loafing about and people had made complaints. Several previous convictions having been proved against the accused, he was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor, and went down to his doom complaining bitterly. The Court then adjourned.
