■ [Heutee’s Agency.l The New Speaker. Melijouiine, July 22. Parliament was opened to-day. Mr Lalor, member for Grant, was elected Speaker, on the motion of the Hon. Mr Berry, seconded by Mr Gaunson, member for Ararat. The Premier notified that it had heen agreed to adjourn the vote of want of confidence debate until to-morrow. IVlasonic Honors. Mr Mason, member for South Gippsland, and a supporter of the opposition in the Assembly, is a candidate for the position of Chairman of Committees. Action for label. A writ has been served upon a Melbourne newspaper for £SOOO damages, at the instance of Messrs Swallow and Ariel, for libel, in stating that the firm had dismissed several of their employees in connection with the recent elections. [Messrs Swallow and Ariel are biscuit manufacturers, and the journal referred to is probably the “ Argus.”]
