—«• — WAIMATE—THIS DAY. (Before 11. Bectlmin, Esq., 11. M., ami Ili.s AVor.sliip the Mayor.) TJIK WilMll'E KELLY G.VKG. Win. Talbot and Eugene Ford were brought up on remand, charged with presenting a revolver at Wm. Steele, on Sunday, July 11. Inspector Fender appeared to prosecute. William Steele, sworn, stated that prisoners drove up to the hut which he and two others occupied on Mr Douglas’ Waiho station, from the direction of Waiho Forks Hotel, some I.V miles nearer Waimate. Talbot demanded tea, but was refused ; then Ford made the same demand, but Talbot said he would bet him he couldn’t get any. Ford then put Talbot outside, and ami drawing a revolver thrust it in witness’ face, and calling him “ a b y b threatened to blow “ his b y brains out” if he didn’t make the tea.
At last witness felt alarmed, and one of his mates advising him to give way, he complied. Ford then insisted upon witness drinking first. This he and his mate did, and prisoners then left. Both men were intoxicated. Mary Ann Symons, wife of the keeper of the Waiho Forks Hotel, deposed to prisoners coming there in the absence of her husband. Neither were sober. They stayed about an hour and a quarter and drank a couple of glasses each of spirits. Ford produced a revolver and fired one chamber into the fireplace, and then pointed the weapon at her. She desired him to take it out, but Ford told her not to be frightened as he was only in fun. R. Finlayson, landlord of the Redclilf Inn (some seven miles nearer the Waitaki than Steele’s hut), deposed to prisoners coming there, and stated that he received the revolver produced from Ford, and afterwards gave it to Sergt. Gilbert, after discharging two chambers of it. Sergt. Gibert, in charge at Waimate, proved arresting Ford on July 13, and said he found 18 cartridges, fitting the revolver, in Ford’s possession, and took four similar cartridges from Talbot. Talbot was discharged with a strong caution as to his narrow escape. Ford was committed for trial at the next sittings of the District Court. Mrs 830110113 was severely reprimanded for suppling liquor to men in the condition in which the accused were, the Resident Magistrate remarking that such practices on the part of retailers were the causes of most of the crimes perpetrated in the country.
