A CHINESE “PED.”

It was a simple city, and It was a six days’ go As suits your inclination, Be it either fast or slow ; And ’twas a nimble Chinaman, Whose name was Lum Tee Foo, Though known on this occasion as “ Old number 22.” For twelve hours went he at a rate Of just five miles each one, And then there rose a pleasant shout: “ The Chinaman, he’s done.” “ High time to go,” the judges said, “ He’d died upon the track. What’s that ? By heavens, hang'my bones, If that ’ere cuss ain’t hack ! ” Five minutes had he stayed awajq Five minutes, and no more ; And now that spry Celestial man Was travelling as before. And every dozen hours he Drops limping from the race, Is absent just five minutes, then Resumes his merry pace. It is a grateful city, and The six days’ walk is done ; No less a person than the Mayor Must take the belt to “ John.” The Mayor, he lifts the tent its flap, And then pops out again, For sponging of each other’s heads Are two twin Chinamen. —“ N. Y. Sun.”
