[Pee “Times” Special Wire.] The Kumara Mining Accident. Kumaka, July 17. An inquest on the body of the body John Phelan was commenced this morning at 10 o’clock and terminated at noon, when the following verdict was returned :—“That the deceased, John Phelan came by his death by accident, and that he was suffocated by the falling of earth in a sludge channel, and that the accident was caused by the giving way of a false set of timber in the face of the drive.” Miners’ Meeting, Dunedin, July 17. A large meeting of miners at Green Island carried resolutions urging the immediate dismissal of the Mine Inspector, the formation of a Minors’ Union, the establishment of a Miners’ Sustentation Fund, requesting the Government to publish the Mining Inspector’s reports for the year and urging the Minister of Education to establish evening classes in connection mining districts.
