NEWS OF THE DAY.

Last week a match was arranged in Dunedin between J. O'Connor of Timaru and C. Swan of Christchurch, for 12 hours, at ,l - 2o a side. The match will take place in Christchurch on July 21, most probanly at the Oddfellows’ Hall. The conditions of the match will be published during the week. At the Tennika R.M. Court yesterday Frederick Nelson, charged with stealing from flic person, was remanded until "Wednesday next. Ploughing operations have commenced on a good many of the farms at Makikihi and St. Andrews. The late rains have done comparatively trilling damage to the district roads, while it has left the land in capital condition for tillage. At the R,M. Court, this morning, before 11. Rectham, Ksip, 11. M., David Risk supposed to be suffering from lunacy from drink, was remanded for medical examination. The civil business was adjourned in consequence of the sitting of the District Court, until Friday. The present contractors arc making capital headway with the Breakwater. Since the last mccticg of the Harbor Board a section of ID feet of the monolith has been completed, and last evening another section of is feel was finished. An extnesion seawards of 27 feet in a few weeks is not bad work.
