South Canterbury Times. TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 1880. NEWS OF THE DAY.

The licensed victuallers and citizens of Dunedin are said to be unanimous in their condemnation of bottle licenses.

A tin-lined dish, used for carrying dynamite at the railway works, was being soldered by a smith, at Amberley, on Saturday, when an explosion occurred, and the tradesman narrowly escaped serious injury. The accident arose through some of the dynamite getting between the iron and the lining. At a general meeting of the Geraldine Pacing Club on Saturday, the annual balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £-43 4s fid, was adopted, and Messrs Chamberlain, Denoon, Duncan, and Pearpoint were elected members of committee. The father of the young boy who was sentenced at Dunedin the other day by I. N. Watt, R.M., to three months’ imprisonment for sleeping in a brewery has petitioned His Excellency for a remission of the sentence.

Just as complaints from the owners of empty wells and tanks were becoming general, the weather has taken a change and last evening and to-day has witnessed a steady downfall of rain.

A man named John Fleming was sentenced by the Waimatc bench yesterday to two months imprisonment, for stealing a pair of trousers from the shop of F. Gaitt on Saturday last. William Fraser, who had sold the trousers and handed the proceed,s over to Fleming, alleged that he had no knowledge of the theft, and was discharged.

Mr J. M. Shepherd will rc-opcn tomorrow (Wednesday), in the back store adjoining those lately burnt down.

Mm winter Show. —Peacock and Gcaney beg to tender their sincere thanks to their friends and the public generally, for the very liberal support accorded them since commencing business, and they have extreme pleasure in intimating that they will on Thursday and Friday, July Ist and 2nd, give a grand show of Beef, Mutton, etc. The premises having been considerably enlarged since Christmas, the linn arc in a better position now to display their midwinter show. The public are invited to inspect the quality of the meat exhibited on the show days, which will be found to surpass anything ever before shown in Timaru.— [Advt.]
