The ordinary practice is for trains to pass each other here, by the Dunedin train going on to the siding. Having done so he was shunting to the original siding, and was just crossing the main line when his engine was struck by the Invercargill engine. The cowcatchers of both engines were opposite each other but that of the Invercargill train impacted on the left side of the Clinton one, and having a heavy' load behind the impetus capsized the Dunedin engine broad-side on the rails, which being light ones were cut asunder. The Invercargill engine ran off the line about a foot without displacing the carriages. The driver and lire in an were overturned with the engine, and had an exceedingly narrow escape. The former jumped oil, and the latter remained on the cab, out which he was pulled by r his mates, the guage glass fortunately not bursting by the furnace door Hying open. The passengers for Invercargill including several females were greatly terrified. Assistance was telegraphed for, and the Invercargill train was replaced on the line, and left Edendalc with another engine about two on Sunday morning. Doth engines were damaged, the Dunedin one seriously. Au enquiry waa held to-day r .
