licensed Victuallers’ Deputation. Wellington, June 21.
A deputation from the Licensed Victuallers’ Conference waited on the Government this morning with suggested amendments to the Licensing Hill. The reply was that the matter would be considered. Xanknrvis alias Ma jor alias Bowden was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for stealing books from St. Michael’s Church. A Riclx Claim. Dexedix, June 2L The case of Alves v. City Corporation, in which 4X50,000 damages were claimed for certain land of the Fernhill Colliery taken for the construction of the Silverstream water-race, is proceeding before Justice Williams and two assessors, and is likely to last over a week. There arc about lifty witnesses on each side. Suspicious Death. Invercargill, June 24. The wife of a publican at North Invercargill has been found dead in bed. Several severe bruises on the body have excited suspicion of violence, and an inquest was commenced yesterday and adjourned for medical evidence. Autocrats in Dangrer. At a meeting of licensed victuallers it was resolved to ask the Government if the Commissioners are acting from instructions. or on their own responsibility, in reference to the notices sent to licensees of wooden hotels, about refusing their licences unless the houses are built of brick, stone, or concrete. A memorial is to be forwarded to the Government, drawing attention to the excessive powers of Licensing Commissioners, and to the recent arbitrary powers exercised in this district, and asking the right of appeal to a higher Court in cases where applications for renewals arc refused.
