At the Supreme Court to-day Albert Warren for larceny was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment with hard labor. The trial of Shaw for arson is proceeding.
Shop liifting-.
Christchurch, June 16. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, Hichard Wood, very respectably connected here was charged with breaking into the shops of B. Cash, draper, and the New Zealand Clothing Company, and stealing money and goods therefrom. He was remanded for evidence.
Alleged Gambling.
A case against the two leading publicans for allowing gambling in their houses will be heard on Tuesday next. Singular Fatal Accident. Duxedix, June 16. Air J. Hood, of Pembroke, has met his death under peculiar circumstances. Three weeks ago lie was riding with a knife in his belt, when his horse fell, causing the infliction of a nasty wound in Ids side from the knife. He took no notice of it, and tetanus set in on Monday.
Inquest at Bunedin.
At the inquest to-day on William England, the Coroner spoke of the necessity for a morgue. A Jotter found on deceased was read, in which he stated his intention of committing suicide, having no money and no means of purchasing food. The jury found a verdict of “ suicide while temporarily insane,” adding a rider urging on the Corporation the pressing necessity for a Coroner’s court and a morgue. Another S«oaa. IXVERCARCIILL, June 16. A meeting was held last night of burgesses favorable to the £120,000 loan, for water supply and town improvements. The Abandoned Euu. The particulars respecting Campbell’s abandoned run to the effect that the run has been taken by a company of eight vabbiters, who intend to export the skins, is confirmed.
Invercargill Supreme Court*
At the Supremo Court to-day, Schmidt, for shooting at his wife, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with labor. Harlwood, for larceny, was sentenced to eighteen months/and Collins for the same oifence to nine mouths’ imprisonment with hard
labor. Cocks, a boy, was charged with manslaughter for shooting- another boy named Curtis, at Wallacotowu, on March 29th. The case, which has already occupied a considerable time in the hearing, is expected to last all day. It is exciting great interest, the prisoner being undefended by counsel.
