In the course of his speech, at an election meeting held in county Carlow on April 2, Mr Grey, Lord Mayor of Dublin, one of the candidates for the county, made a statement which has occasioned some excitement. He said that several parcels of dynamite had been placed under the platform by persons hostile to his candidature and that of Mr Macfarlano. The diabolical J>lot, which might have resulted in great oss of life, had happily been discovered in time, and the dynamite had that morning been buried at some distance from the spot where they stood. The design was to scatter abroad those who
soagfif to vindicate 'their rights as Irishmen. What would they think of men ,Vho would support their principles by such means? God forbid he should suggest that the opposing candidates had anything to do with this explosive, but whoever devised the plot, it had failed. At the close of the proceedings the people quickly separated.
