TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinaly meeting - of the Timaru Borough Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Gibson, Ross, Gabites, Shepherd, Sherratt, Greenup, and Jackson. COIUtKSI’ONDEXCK. An application from Mr J. Bruce re kerbing Grey street was declined fur the present. From the Town Clerk, Christchurch., inviting his Worship to a conference on; the Municipal Act, on June 20. Referred to the Works Committee. From Mr Austin, District Engineer, asking when the water supply scheme would be carried out. From Sir Evans respecting an inadvertent breach of the Building Regulations, requesting that the deviation might: be allowed. It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Gibson, that ns the Council had prosecuted other persons for infringements of the Regulations, the Council could not sec its way to 'make an exception in Mr Evans’ case, ruimic wouks. The plans and specifications for; a culvert on the West Town BeVt were adopted. Thu Mayor was authorised to have the footpaths shingled where necessary. The Works Committee reported that they could not recommend auy expenditure at present on the improvements suggested by the Rev. W. Gillies. The committee recommended that the pro-

sent system of street lighting be continued ; that an effort should be made to reduce the expense of testing the water pipes, and that an engineer be consulted before any steps are taken to' procure hydrants for fire prevention. The report of Mr Young on the testing of the waterpipes, for the two weeks ended May 23, showed that 1224 pipes had been passed and 87 broken. He also reported that certain numbers of special castings were short delivered. The repor s were referred to the Works Committee with power to act. FINANCIAL. A letter was read from the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, informing the Council that owing to an agreement between the different Banks in the colony, the payment of interest on the Council’s current account would cease after the 31st inst. His Worship stated that the Council’s overdraft at the Bank, after the accounts passed that evening were paid, would be .£2471, an amount which must not be exceeded. He expected that the waterworks loan would be floated in about two months’ time. GENERAL RATE. The Council having formed a special meeting, it was resolved that a general rate of Is in the £be struck for the year ending Dec. 31st, 1880. The rate is now • payable at the Town Clerk’s office. The meeting then terminated.
