SIR GEORGE GREY AT INVERCARGILL.

Invercargill, May 20. Sir George Grey addressed a largo meeting of citizens here to-night. The Mayor occupied the chair. Tho speaker said little or nothing new, the address being simply a rechauffe of that delivered to the Christchurch electors. Tho'same explanation was made re--gardingthe deficiency in the revenue. He advocated the imposition of the land and income taxes, and the abolishment : of tho property tax. He urged them to resist any attempt to do away with the education vote, and repeated the observations he made at Christchurch regarding the stoppage of subsidies to local bodies. The, .land question \yas referred to at some length, but nothing new was said. Regarding immigration, tbo ,speaker. ( advocated the American system, being of opinion that if it was fully known that large tracts of ' country were available for settlement, ; small capitalists and other desirable settlers Avould come to and settle in the ; colony in large enough numbers to avoidthe expense attendant upon the-present immigration scheme. He repeated his • observations iro unseatrnent for ■ Christchurch, tho nomination of the Governor b3 r the people, and the abolition of tho Legislative Council. He spoke for im hour and a half, but his address, inasmuch as it contained no novel feature, caused disappointment. On Mr Feldwick’s motion, Sir George Grey was accorded tho thanks of the meeting for his address, and was assured of their confidence in him as leader of the Liberal party in New Zealand.
