BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Tho ordinary monthly meeting o£ the above Board was held to-day, at the Education office. Present —llev. G. Barclay (in the chair), and Messrs Barker, Howell Postlethwaitc and Goldsmith. Tim LIDBAHY SUBSIDY. The Secretary of the Waimate Public Library Committee wrote protesting against the participation of the Timaru Library in the Government subsidy to Libraries, on account of the Timaru institution being a private one, and not open to the general public. It was stated with reference to this matter that the Timaru Library Committee had taken stops to comply with the Act. The Board expressed some surprise at tho matter being brought before it. LEAVE OD AUSEXCE. Some discussion took place with regard to applications from teachers for leave of absence, and it was resolved—“ That in ease of any teacher applying for leave of absence it be understood that each application will be considered on its merits.” I’D ANTING Gil A NTS. A number of schools sent in applications for grants from the Board, for planting purposes. In reply to the chairman, the Secretary stated that there was a sum in hand of the Boaid’s funds amounting to about £075. They held a sum of over £2OOO, but the whole of that sum with the exception of the £075 referred to had been allocated.

With regard to the planting, the secretary added that he had scut cir-

culars round to each school informing them that the= Board had a certain sum in hand for planting purposes, and those schools wishing to participate in the same had better send in applications. The Chairman said that in distributing this money the Board ought to consider what schools had already received grants for planting. Perhaps it would be best to deal with the applications seriatim. On the motion of Mr Barker, it was ultimately decided—“ That all the new schools, or such as have hitherto had no grants, be allowed a sum of £lO, to he expended in planting and protecting (forest trees only).” The following new schools were then granted £lO each: Waiho, Hunter, Opihi. Mount Gay, Pleasant Yalley, Scotsburn, Pairlie Creek, Waihi Bush, North Orari, South Orari, Burke’s Pass, Wai-iti, and Waituna Greek. Tho older established schools were then dealt with as follows Pleasant Point school was granted £5, Waimate £lO, Claremont £5, Pareora £5, Hakahu £5, Rangitata Island £3 10s, Terauka £2O (to be expended solely on the new grounds), and Geraldine £lO. WAI-ITI SCHOOL, The Wai-iti school wrote requesting the Board to erect a lavatory. The application was refused. INCIDENTAL EXPENSES. The Timaru School Committee wrote asking,the Board to increase their allowance tor incidental expenses. With reference to this Mr Barker moved and Mr Goldsmith seconded the following resolution which was carried —“ That tho application of the Timaru School Committee re increase of incidental :fund, he not entertained, and that the subject of incidental allowances he referred to a sub-com-mittee, consisting of the Rev. G. Barclay, Mr Barker and the mover ; the Rev. G. Barclay to be convener.” TIMARU SIDE SCHOOL. Tiic Secretary submitted the plans of the proposed new side school, Timaru. He stated the structure was to be of brick, would contain 150 scholars, and the estimated cost £BOO. It was resolved that the consideration of the plans, &c., bo deferred until the next meciing. FINANCE. It was resolved that Messrs Postlethwaite, Barker, and the Chairman be appointed a finance committee for the purpose of examining accounts, &c. Accounts amounting to £224 10s lid were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
