TIMARU—THIS HAY. (Before B. Bcetham Esq., E.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was fined 5s ; two others were each fined 10s, or the usual alternative, LARCENY. John Quinn was charged with the larceny of a pair of trousers and a singlet, valued at 15s, the property of Edward Hudson, residing at the Melville Hotel. The accused pleaded not guilty, and remarked that he had never taken a pennyworth of any other man’s property in his life. Edward Hudson stated that he Avas living at the Melville Hotel. He recently left the clothes produced in his bedroom upstairs. When he went into his room •fur them subsequently they Avcrc gone. Next saw them in the possession of the accused, who Avas Avearing the trousers. Constable Dennis Maroney having deposed to the arrest of the accused he Avas asked Avhether he had anything to say, and denied all knowledge of the affair.

Sergeant Haldane said accused had been about town now for three weeks. He was doing nothing. Detective Kirby said lie know accused to be a hard-working man, a ploughman by trade,, but at present out of work. His Worship, addressing the accused, said that there was not the slightest doubt he had appropriated the clothes, and for doing so, whether he was drunk at the time or not, he was liable to imprisonment for six months. Taking into account his previous good character, however, he would bo discharged, but he must bo very careful in future. CIVIL CASES. Trustee in Potter’s estate v. Simmons —Claim £GS balance due for work done. Mr Hamersley for plaintiff ; Mr Eeid for defendant. _ . Judgment was given in this case [this morning for plaintiff for half the amount claimed, viz., £32 10s and costs of the Court, each party to pay their own ad-' ditional costs. The Court then adjourned.
