[Per “Times” Special Wire.] Charge of Embracery. Auckland, April 30. The charge against Samuel Coombes, draper, for endeavoring to iniluencc Martin and Mason, jurors, in favor of Hughes, who was acquitted on a charge of indecent assault at the last sessions of the Supreme Court, is being heard at the Police Court to-day. John Mason deposed that after he was summoned fur the jury, the defendant came to his simp for a shave and enquired which of the two brothers was on the jury. On being told he said lie (Mason), would be on the jury in Hughes’case. Upon Mason asking how he iiuew that Coombes said, “ it has all been arranged, and I have only to see you about it.” He also said he had come to see how far Mason would be favorable to Hughes. Mason said if the person who had sent Coombes had

come himself he would have wanted a large sized hat. Coombes produced a list of jurors. Mason’s brother gave corroborative evidence. Coombes was commited for trial. Bail was allowed in £6OO. Wellington EUre Brigade. Wellington, April 30. At a meeting of the City Council, Mr Whitford, superintendent of the late Wellington Fire Brigade, was appointed superintendent of the new Brigade about to be formed. Arson. The charge against Win. Dovereaux for arson is now proceeding.
