[Pee “Times” Special Wiee-1 Political. Auckland, A pril22.—Mr Speight has postponed addressing his constituents till next week. A Costly Prosecution. It is reported that the costs of the Crown Prosecution of J. C. Youug will amount to £2,500 owing to the expense of summoning distant witnesses. The Cattle Plague. Two more Veterinary Surgeon Inspectors have been appointed at Waikato,were plcuro-puumouiais spreading, At last meeting of the South Auckland Cattle Boards, veterinary surgeon Eavcn reported that the disease was raging in the Cambridge district. One speaker alleged that the affected cattle belonged to the Piako swamp Company, and that the cattle of the Piako estate arc in great numbers itx the bush. A rigid scrutiny of the Company’s cattle will be made. A Settler in Trouble. Palmehston Noirnr, April 22.—Alexander Cameron, a settler at Ngawararau, and well known in the district, was this morning committing for trial for selling bullocks that were given him to graze. Another charge of embezzling money belonging to the sumo prosecutor, McConway, of Turaka, will be heard Ihi afternoon. Attempted Suicide. Wellington, April 22. —A woman named McLuggan attempted suicide at noon to-day by throwing herself off the breastwork at tbo beach. She was rescued by a constable and taken to the police station. Acclimatisers 3tun Mad. IxvEiicAimu.L, April 22. — At the meeting of the. Acclimatisation Society it was resolved to increase the bonus for killing shags from threepence to a shilling; to petition Parliament for a general license in the Colony; to impose a gun tax of ten shillings ; also on account of the rabbit pest to recommend and encourage the introduction of weasels, foxes, and stoats.
