[Per “Times” Special "Wire.] Shipping; Accident. Auckland, April 20.—The barque Wellington, bound from Kaipara to Mel bourne, put back, leaky, with seven feet of water in her hold. The pumps did not reduce the leak, which was started in a gale. The Southern Cross has been placed on the Fiji trade. Black Transactions. Complaints arc made by colliers that the Union S.S. Co.’s vessels convey coal beyond what they require from llussell to other places, for sale, A Big; Band Bubble. News lias been received here that the prospectus of a Waikato Laud Association will bo issued before the departure of the mail. The object is to settle the Piako lands, capital £600,000, in £2O shares. The directors are Thos. Eussell. Sir James Fergusson, and Mr Mundell. 9000 acres arc to be sold for £300,000. Half the capital is to bo absorbed in first purchase of the land. The Piako estate is proposed to be divided into manageable farms. It is expected the scheme will bring half a million of money into Auckland. Alleged Embezzlement. Wellington, April 20. —At the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday J, C. Young was charged with nmboaalinc , £57 the property of the Government. Mr Brookfield prosecuted, and Messrs. Hesketh and Tyler defended. The case came to a close unexpectedly. Two of : the principal Native witnesses got into a fog over certain accounts that were placed before tbem, and contradicted each other. The Crown Prosecutor said that after the evidence of these witnesses he did not see the jury could convict. His Honor remarked that the evidence was not such as they could convict a man charged with felony upon, and directed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty. The prisoner was admitted to bail to answer other indictments. C. O. Davies entered into his recognisance for £SOO for prisoner’s appearance on Wednesday when the next case will be beard. Wellington Shaky. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 12.42 this afternoon. The direction—N, to S, A Tramway Case.
At the Supreme Court this morning the case of Lockic and others y. Macdonald and others (the original directors of the Wellington Tramway Company), was commenced. The action is to set aside the sale of the undertaking of the company on the ground that the provisional directors of the company had become pecuniarily interested in the undertaking with the original promoters. The case is most likely to occupy two or three days. Another. Collapse. April 20R. D. Maney.who contested the last election for Napier, has filed his schedule, liabilities, £22,021; assets, £20,420. £17,400 is secured by. mortgage. At a meeting of creditors yesterday, it was resolved to withdraw the bankruptcy and granted Maney twelve months to collect the debts due to him. Stiff-necked and Unemotional. Sensational revival services are being held by the Rev. Mr Pym, but they are not very successful.
