(By Telegraph.) CANTEEBUEY AUTUMN MEETING. FIRST KAY —TUESDAY, MARCH 30. The weather to-day was cloudy but fine, and there was a large attendance on the course. As usual a good deal of interest was taken in the events, and, independent of the money that passed through the totalisators, the bookmakers did a moderate amount of business. The loss of Templeton was greatly felt by the public, and many were the expressions of regret at the old favorite’s untimely end. Fishhook and York were scratched at 10.30 last night for the Autumn Handicap. The following were the results : Free Handicap of 3 sovs each, with 50s sovs added, for tjirec-ycar-olds and upwards. One mile. Mr G-. Fraser’s ch h Le Loup, syrs 9st lib (T. Clark) 1 Mr H. Goodman’s ch h Tera, 3yrs 6st 71bs ... (A. Hoskins) 2 Hon, W. Kobinson’s br f On Dit, 3yrs, 6st 41bs ... (W. Martin) 3
Betting—6 to 4 on Le Loup. After a little fiddling at the post, the trio wore dispatched, Le Loup having slightly the best of the start. The other two soon closed on the leader, who fell behind. On Lit and Tera raced together with Le Loup in the rear till entering tire straight. The chestnut then went up and passed them, eventually winning by a length, without
being asked to race, Tera beating On Dit for second place by a head. Time—l min, 46^secs. Great Autumn Handicap of 10 sovs each, with 300 sovs added, for three-year-olds and upwards, the second to receive 25 sovs out of the stake. One mile and a half. Mason and Vallance’s bl g Camballo oyrs, Bst (Harris) 1 Mr Cutt’s Mata, oyrs, 9st Blbs (Matthews) 2 Mr G. Fraser’s blk c Betrayer, 3yrs 7st9lbs (Clifford) 3 Fishhook, Templeton, York, and On Dit were scratched. Betting—2 to 1 agst Foul Play, and Betrayer ; 3 to 1 Mata ; 5 to 1 Volunteer ; 10 to 1 the others. This of course was the great event of the day, and considerable interest was taken in the result. Foul Play and Betrayer were served up warm favorites, and from the betting it will be seen that the favorite started at 10 to 1. Out of £278, representing 139 shares in the totalisator, only five had pinned their faith on Caraballo. The race was an exceedingly even one, and requires very little description. After four false starts the field was despatched in a cluster, with the exception of Norseman, who stuck at the post. Marie Antiouette was the first to show in front, with Foul Phiy, Luna, and Camballo close up. Going round the back of the course, the field were in a cluster, the leaders being Foul Play, Titauia, and Mata. This order was maintained until entering the straight, where Mata held the foremost place, and whips were brought out, and a very exciting struggle ensued, the issue appearing very doubtful. A short distance from home Camballo commenced to go up and getting on even terms with the leader, drew away from him amidst immense applause and won by a length. Betrayer came with a rush at the last and finished about a length behind Mata. Cainballo’s winning was a great boil over, as most of the knowing ones thought that Foul Play was good enough to pull it off. .Mason and Vallauce’s win was a very popular one, and Harris was loudly cheered on bringing horse into the paddock. Time —2min. 41secs. Champagne Stakes of 15 sovs each, with 250 sovs added, for two-year-olds. Colts, Bst lOlbs ; fillies, Bst. 81 bs. Six furlongs. 25 subs. Hon R. Tire start was not a particularly good one, Lure being left several lengths behind, and, the rest getting away in a cluster. Romeo was the first to tail off, and Lure cLsed up to him. Coming into the straight Sir Modred held the leadjwith Virginia Wahr second. Lure closed up a little, and a good race ensued between her and Virginia. The latter was soon passed, and Lure gained a little on Sir Modred, but could get no nearer than his quarters, the colt winning easily. Time—lmiu. 19sec.
