EXTRAORDINARY SUICIDE.
An extraordinary case of suicide is reported by the Wairai'apa “Standard ” to have occurred at Upper Mauriccvillc, twenty miles above Mastcrton, on Feb. 15. The chief witness, a very intelligent girl of ten, the daughter of Five Nilson, the deceased, deposed that her father had died six weeks previously through a kick from a horse, when an inquest was held by Dr Hosking and a verdict of accidental death was returned. Since that time her mother had been in a very low way, and bad been seen to scrape the phosphorous from lucifer matches, which she had evidently swallowed, as from the post mortem examination of the stomach which had been made hy Dr Beard, traces of phosphorous were found. From the evidence of another witness it appeared that ever since the death of her husband she bad shown signs of insanity. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased died from the effects of having taken phosphorous from lucifcr matches while suffering from temporary insanity.
