[Per “Times” Special Wire.] Death of a laborer. Wellington, Feb. 28. A man named Brown, a laborer, employed on the Corporation works, at Newton, was killed by a fall of earth. IWother Chisholm’s Daughter’s Blessing. Dr Lemon has received a cable message from Col. Glover, Chairman of the Eastern Extension Company, forwarding the following message from the Lady Mayoress of Dublin, to the Australian and New Zealand Press; —“ As a daughter of Caroline Chisholm, the Emigrant’s friend, I thank the Australian people for their magnificent subscriptions to the Mansion House Fund, for the relief of the Irish distress. I don’t know what wo could have done without your aid. It makes me so proud of my old home. £I3OO per Bank of Australasia ; £ISOO per Union Bank of Australia ; £SOO from Launceston ; and £IOOO from Adelaide, have just been received. Again thanks. A Disclaimer from the Governor. Dunedin, Feb. 28. —The Covernor intimates in the papers that lie is not in any way interested in any of the Hon. W. I'obinsun’s horses, but probably he will form a stud ol his own. Ho has bought one horse in the north, but has not taken delivery. If he goes in for racing he will not bo in partnership with anyone. The Flogging: Magistrate. Edward Thorne, for stealing money, was sentenced to six hours’ imprisonment and ordered to receive T2 lashes. Discovery of a Silver Mine. A telegram in the “ Times ” says that an important discovery has been made at Cardrona. A quartz reef carrying silver in considerable quantities lias been found on the main Cardrona Bangc, near the head of a branch of Boundary Creek, and a prospecting area has hoen applied for. The stone is supposed to contain gold.
