Warlike Preparations.
Hawera, Fob. 27. —The constabulary arc steadily working at the formation ot roads, and arc about one mile from Kaupokonui. A picket of ten men arc constantly stationed at Kaupokonui bridge, as it seems that in case of hostilities, the enemy might seize the bridge, and render direct com muni cation with Hawera difficult. An earthwork protection is also being thrown up at the camp. Arrest of a Government land Agant Tauranga, Feb. 27. —J. 0. Aouug, late Government Land Purchase Agent was arrested yesterday, on three informations, for feloniously stealing mouej r s paid to him in the capacity of Land Purchase Agent, the amounts being £sl, £7B, and £lO.. Bail was accepted, himself in £IOOO, and two sureties of £SOO each. The case will bo beard to-morrow. Nelson ißifle»lVleeting. Nelson, Feb. 27. The members about to take part in the Eiflc Assn’s meeting, are arriving here rapidly. Arrangements for firing are pretty nearly completed. There arc twelve targets this year instead of eight. Fatal larking. Dunedin, Feb. 27.—Eobert Irving has been killed, and Hugh McCann seriously injured at the Blue Spur. They ■were larking together as some trucks came up the incline, and, getting caught by the rope, were dragged round by the winding gear. Consultations. In Abram’s sweep the first money goes to Telford, Alexandra; second to Morkanc, Port Chalmers; third to Paterson, Octagon Hotel. In Dodson’s sweep the first goes to Vallance ; the second to three workgirls in a local factory ; the third to Timaru. In the Press consultation H. Lyon gets first; Grant and Co., of the steamer Wellington, second: third to a resident of Napier. In Cameron’s consultation the first prize of £IOOO goes to Chitha; second to G. Spooner, Dunedin ; third to Captain A. Palmer.
