FAMINE RELIEF MEETING.

The Irish Famine llelief meeting, convened by his Worship the Mayor at the request of several residents, took place last night at the Queen’s Hall, his Worship occupying the chair, and Messrs Crawford, Evans, and Donald Maclean being on the platform. About a dozen people put in an appearance. The Chairman remarked that he was very sorry to see so few people present after the influential requisition that had been placed in his hands. A letter was then read from Archdeacon Harper, apologising for his unavoidable absence, and expressing sympathy with the object of the meeting. The Chairman continued his- remarks as to the attendance. He could not understand why those gentlemen who had been so

active in signing the requisition were not there, and lie certainly thought they ought to be present. (Applause.) His Worship proceeded to remark that the people of Timaru were the only people who had not as yet taken any action with reference to the relief of the sufferers by the famine. They could only now make up for lost time, and try their best to collect as ranch as possible. (Applause.) Messrs Maclean, Evans, and Crawford addressed the meeting to the same effect, the last speaker moving the following resolution :—“ That this meeting deeply deplores the distress now in Ireland, and pledges itself to raise subscriptions for the Irish Relief Fund.” (Applause) Mr J. M. Twomey explained that the reason why there were so few Irishmen at the meeting was that they had already made a handsome collection at their church.

Mr Cordon spoke at some length, seconding the foreging resolution. After some other speakers had addressed the meeting, the following committee were appointed to collect subscriptions : —His. Worship the Mayor, the clergymen'of all denominations, and Messrs William Evans, John Crawford, J. M. Twomey, Donald Maclean,"E. H. Lough, W. Collins, G. Gordon, W. Blennerhassett, and E. Smith. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
