[Eeuxeb’s Agency.] The Rise in Wool. Melbourne, Feb. 18. The wool season has closed ; 126,000 bales were sold in Melbourne, the value being £2,500,000. Messrs Goldsbrough estimate that the yield of Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand exceeds last year’s by 40,000 bales. Private cables state that at the February wool sales an advance of 12 i to 15 per cent took place, and that the demand is very active. Berry’s Prospects. Mr Berry states he believes that the result of his appeal to the country will be the return of a small, but more united Liberal majority. Famine Belief. Several thousand bags of flour were exported from Melbourne to London during the last fortnight. Bead Nuts on the Governor. Sydney, Feb. 17.—1 n the Legislative Assembly last night, two motions, brought forward by Mr David Bu chanau, that the Lieutenant-Governor should not be allowed to be a member of the Legislative Council, and objecting to the Governor’s use of the prerogative of mercy in the case of two of the Wautabadgery bushrangers, were rejected by a large niajority. Effects of the Exhibition. The vital statistics for last year, which were published to-day, show that an unprecedented increase in the population of the colony has taken place.] Reserved for the Rope. Bhisbane, Feb. 18. —The bushranger who stuck up the National Bank at Cunnamulla, last month has been tried, and sentenced to death.
