FIJI NEWS.
[By Telegkai’h.] AUCKLAND, Feu. 18. News to Jan. 31, states that an official enquiry has been held into the mortality aboard the Queensland schooner Stanley, through the batches being battened during the late tornado. It was decided that due care and attention had been afforded the Natives, and that the accommodation was ample under ordinary circumstances.
A serious epidemic broke out owing to severe weather and want of sufficient and suitable food to check the epidemic in its early stages. A meeting has been held, but many of the natives were drowned coming or going consequent on the severe weather. An immense fleet of over 300 canoes and many European built boats attended the Governor from the Bay to Levuka. The Chief Justice, who sailed from Taverna during the gales, and was reported unheard of, has arrived safely at his destination. Tlie Governor proceeds to Samoa as soon as the .weather is settled.
