A False Alarm. Hawera, Feb. 14.—1 t appears that the wire reported yesterday to be cut was snapped in consequence of the wheel of a dray coining in contact with a telegraph post. A Political Movement. # Christchurch, Feb. 14.—A requisition, is being signed to-day asking the Mayor to convene a public meeting to consider the redistribution of seats in Parliament, and the removal of the railway head-quarters to Dunedin. The Assessment Roll. The time for receiving objections to this year’s assessment roll should be closed to-morrow, but as Sunday is dies non , the Resident Magistrate has extended the time to during office hours on Monday. Already 600 objections have been received against the city assessment. . Supposed Xioss of Eight lives. Duxedix, Feb’. 14.— The master of the schooner Awarua reports to the Collector of Customs that he fears that a whaleboat’s crew of eight men, which went out sealing in July last, and has not since been heard of, must have perished. . The Awarua returns to the islands immediately to make a cpmpletc search. ' Sailed—Ship Wanganui, for London, with nine passengers, and cargo to the value of £108,904, andthe Auckland,with 10 passengers, and cargo to the value of £120,000, leaves to-night.
