WELLINGTON REGATTA.
TOWN EDITION.
The gentle zephyrs that usually hover about the bay at Wellington precluded all but the large boats from taking part in the regatta yesterday, and drove one of the coasters ashore on a sandbank. For the Coasters’ Pace the Sarah Pile, Clematis, Poneke, Alert, and Ellerton started. The latter, shortly after starting, missed stays, and making astern, went ashore at Oriental Bay, The Clematis took the lead and kept it throughout, winning by about two minutes, the Poneka being second, the Alert (which won the Coasters’ Pace at Lyttelton) sailing in third. The other vessel (Sarah Pile) gave in after going about seven miles, owing to her jibboom carrying away. The first-class yacht race was won by Zariffa, and the whaleboat race by a Wellington crew, who pulled in the Wheel-of-Fortune, belonging to Nelson. The remaining races will take place on Saturday, should the weather be favorable. THIS DAY. The out-rigger race was rowed to-day. The Wellington and Wanganui started, and the former won by thirty lengths. The Wellington crew beat the Wanganui crew in the inrigged race, by four lengths. The Volunteer Whaleboat Pace was a most exciting one. The Wanganui Fire Brigade secured the lead by about half a length of the Wellington Naval Brigade which they maintained throughout. This proved the most interesting race yet witnessed.
