THE CHRISTCHURCH RIOTERS.
[from our own correspondent.] Christchurch, Dec. 31. Thomas Woods and Michael Leary, charged this morning with riot, were remanded till Friday. John Barrett, licensee of the Borough Hotel, charged with aiding and abetting the rioters, was also remanded till Friday. Mr Joynt, who appeared for Barrett, applied for bail, representing that as the accused had large contracts on hand, his incarceration would involve his affairs in disastrous consequences. Eventually the Bench granted bail—accused in £IOOO, and two sureties of £SOO each. Barrett’s bondsmen are James Milligan, draper, and Win. Vincent Brewer. For driving over a special constable a cabman was fined 40s. The question of expenses was held over for a week, to ascertain the doctor’s fee. Two men of the three injured on Boxing Day were discharged this morning from the hospital. Special constables are to be on duty to-night from eight o’clock. Great preparations are being made for the pyrotechnic display in Hagley Park to-morrow night.
