GISBORNE, Dec. 8. Webb, late of tbe Standard Insurance Company commenced an action in tbe Supreme Court, Auckland, against Edgcombc, late of Tauranga, for £IOOO for libel and slander in the “ Bay of Plenty Times.” WANGANUI, Dec. 8. The Italian who assaulted Dr Earle on Saturday, proceeded to the racecourse and burned down the fencing, setting light to it in twenty places. He also threatened the custodian with a knife. The police went after him and found him near the heads on Saturday afternoon. A shoemaker named Render son, from the West Coast, stabbed Mr Pole, the landlord of the Maxwelltown hotel. The wound is not very serious. On Saturday morning a man named John Deveriil was drowned in the Wanganui river. He took a horse into the river and fell over the bank into deep water. WELLINGTON, _Dec. 8. The steamer Lusitaua left Weymouth on the 4th Dec. for Australia with 414 passengers. A boy named Hockley had a narrow escape of being shot at Kawawa by a rifle on Saturday He crossed the range just as a man tired a bullet, which passed through his trousers. Curiously enough the marksman actually made a centre. Dennis McCormick, a powerful fellow, appeared in the 11. M. Court charged with cutting and wounding Jas. Flanigan and wife. The wounded

persons were unable to appear. Dr Diver deposed that the man had been cut from nose to eyebrow, besides two cuts on the head. The woman also had two cuts on the head. The prisoner was remanded. Bail allowed. A young man named Hist, for issuing valueless cheques, was remanded for a a similar period. It is believed 15 other charges will be preferred against him. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. The privileges in connection with the anniversary sports were sold to-day for £IG7, being an advance of £BO on last year. For having incorrect and unstamped weights several bakers were fined this morning at the Police Court, and their weights were forfeited. James Findlay, of Temnka, was summoned by the Deputi'-Commissioner Of Stamps for neglecting to file a statement within six months as executor in the estate of the late Charles Dock, of Kook Creek, Waimate. The defendant did not appear, and he was fined £lO and costs.
