LIFEBOAT LODGE, No. 101, 1.0.G.T.
This Lodge held its quarterly meeting on Friday evening, the 7th inst., at the Oddfellows’. Hall,, Sophia street. The attendance was a large one, the heat necessitating the’ Mndows being pulled down, which was accomplished with some difficulty owing .tq the cords and pulleys being out of order. Pro G. E. Peacock, W.C.T., 'was in the chair. After. the opening preliminaries, two candidates ..were proposed for the membershipand two initiated. A recess was afterwards granted, when tea, cake, and' pastry were handed round in abundance. These good things have been ,■ done ample justice to, the Lodge • once,- more resumed business, and the . reports of the various, officers for . the pas term were read and adopted. iff For the quarter ending 31st October the Secretary reported the Minute Book of the Lodge for the, past Term, even after a careful perusal afforded little matter for amplification into an elaborate report. The Lodge had been, he might say, exceptionally well attended, and had always found sufficient occupation during its sessions to more than fill up the hours allotted to duty, and although no matters of special importance had taken up the attention of the members or any striking results been achieved, still a steady mustering of the members must be regarded as an exhibition of interest in their works and a preparation for whatever action the cause of events may open upon .them. The addition to the membership during the past term had been thirty-six—thirty inniated, and three admitted on clearance cards. He was happy to say there had not been any voluntary withdrawals from the Order — only four had withdrawn by clearance, of which other Lodges would have the advantage—and the Order dn general suffered no loss. The members, returned last quarter were 22 sisters and 96 brothers, making a total 'Of 118, which added to the 36 joined during the quarter, made a total of 154 ; 4 had withdrawn by clearance card, and 16 been suspended for non-payment of dues. This left 134 members good on the books, an increase of 16 members, notwithstanding a loss, from the causes mentioned, of " twenty. During the quarter they had had as many visitors from various parts of the jurisdiction, and it was very gratifying to hear their remarks onthe appearance of the Lodge room, and the' working of the Lodge. During the quarter 7 brothers and 1’ sister had had the’2nd degree conferred' on them, and 1 brother the third degree of charity. The Grand Lodge had recognised the degrees as an important part of the, work of the Order Although some time must elapse before the conferring, of the degrees, yet their attainment was the more honorable, and the wearing and the right to wear, theregalia of the degree of Charity should be an object; of ambition,,and a pride to all true Templars. Each member should make it a point of possessing his or her own thud degree regalia, as an incentive to the junior members to desire and obtain the.degree. The fourth Anniversary of the Lodge was celebrated on the 12th September v by a' tCa 'and concert, wjiich proved a decided, success, the room being crowded. THb Sister Lodge was well represented. The spread was laid out in first-class style, and reflected great credit upon Bro. and Sister Bruce, to whose hands it was entrusted. The entertainment was opened by an address delivered by their esteemed Bro. S.Y. . Loggatt, W. 0. T. onthe E vilEffects of Intemperance. For the 5 mhsical portion they were .indebted to ’the District Deputy, Bro E. B. Walcote, assisted by various mexnbeis of the order. In conclusion he' would heartily thank the officers and members of. the Lodge for the evidence of their confidence in having elected him to this important office twelve times and during that time hehad only been absenton two occasions. He could truthfully say that if in the discharge of his duties, he h(\d not given entire satis.
factions it'ka’d 1 not been because bo had not discharged his duties to flip best of his abilities and though he now surrendered to them the office he; had held for three years, he would not ceas.e to regard the duties of a G-ood Templar. The installation of officers for the next term then took -place, Bro SJ. L. conducting, the 'ceremony, assisted by Bro E. Jones, B.DG. W.C.T., and Bro It.
