We have to acknowledge receipt of the monthly number of “ New Zealand Brices Current ” ihe half holiday to day wa* observed by the majority of the business firms in town. I was ushered in by a “noon gun, - ’ fired by the Rocket Brigade. Messrs Palmer and Collins will hold their usual weekly sales to-morrow. In connection with the forthcoming sports it is requested tha* - all members of the Timaru athletic Club meet at the Criterion Hotel, at 10 a m., on Monday, The Club supper widhe held in ihe Queen s Hall, at 7,30 the same evening. Yesterday a hurdle racing match took place at the Makikihi races, between Mr Hedge's Alma and Mr Bourne s Lottery, and was won by the latter. The stakes were £5 aside and the winner was mounted by Mr Bradley. At the meeting of the Literary and De> bating society last evening the vote taken on the debate relative to the respective merit of the authors Thackeray and Dickens, resulted in favor of the latter author. The members of the Good Templar fraternity are reminded that the quarteily meeting of the Lifeboat Lodge, I 0.G.T., will take place ; his evening at 7 30. The bu.iness includes the instalation of the D.D. and other important matters. Yesterday, at the Makikihi Race Meet’ ing, the Hurdle Race was won by Mr Bradley’s Milo, the Maiden Plate and Makikihi Handicap by Mr Duncan s Thild, the Hack Race by Burney's Abbot, and the consolation Race by Mr Hoskin’s Jack. _ To day, at the R.M.’s Court, a lunatic named Stevens was committed to the Asy’ lum. The charge of larceny of beer resulted in tee dismissal of the accused with a caution. Messrs Gutter and Woollcombe were the presiding magistrates. A young lady in California threatened to get a divorce on the novel ground of ’ ‘ protracted festivities ” -"he said her husband celebrated his marriage by getting drunk, and kept u|> Ike festival three weeks,
A very smart arrest of a forger was effected yesterday evening by Constable Sul ivan, of the local police force. It will be remembered that in the morning a man named Doyle who had been brought from Temuka by ergeant Carlyon, charged wi‘h drunkeness and dismissed with a caution 1 m being brought before the R.M. During yesterday afternoon Mr Leonard Tombs, lessee of the Royal Hotel, Temuka, reported at the police station ihat on the night preuious he had cashed a cheque for u man named Doyle, purporting to be drawn by Mr Richardson and payable to bearer. This, however, on presen a Ton at the Bank turned out to be a forgery. Con’ stable Sullivan, whose - uspicions were aroused regarding the prisoner mention ed, was despatched to pick up par iculars and I within half au hour had not only picked up i articulars, but also picked up his mau, who, on being charged with the forgery, admitted the offeace.
