Cheistchuech, Nov. 5. A menagerie, consisting of a lion, leopard, two bears, and a snake killer arrived from Sydney by the s.s. Wakatipu this morning. His Lordship Bishop Reedwood arrived from Wellington by the s. s. Wakatipu, and was received by a public determination of the Catholic body. A man named Williams was arrested at Lyttelton last night with 45 lbs of smuggled tobacco in his possession. He was brought before the Resident Magistrate and remanded until Friday. The inquest on the body of the child Fogarty, who was found dead yesterday morning, was commenced to-day and adjourned for a fortnight. The evidence showed neglect on the part of the parents. Dunedin, Nov. 5.

Messrs H. Driver and W.D. Stewart, M.H.R.’s will leave Dunedin for Wei. lington on Saturday. It is reported that Mr Henry Driver has resigned his position as Dunedin manager of the Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, owing to the necessity of devoting his undividend attention to private busines, and that Mr D. A man named Joseph Weston was brought up at the Police Court to-day, charged with arson and was remanded. G-uy Fawkes’ day passed off without any demonstration beyond a supper amongst the members of the Loyal Orange Lodge. The second mistress of the High School has resigned. Her successor will be advertised for, at a salary of £2OO.
