It is understood that the Financial Statement is well advanced and will be ready to be brought down this week. Should it be necesssary to do so, the Public Works Statement will be ready at the same time. It has been rumored thattbe Government does not intend to deal thoroughly this session with finance on Public Works hut it is stated that this is incorrect
- The Caledonian Society has voted one hundred guineas for prizes on New Years’ Day. Arrived N.Z.S. Company’s Wairoa from London • with 220 passengers all well. There are no Government immigrants amongst them. Nominations for the Wellington Cup close on i hursday next. In a case of disputed trusteeship argued before Mr Justice Hichmoud the point raised was whether as lias been in the case of Henry Mc’Ardle, a single creditor being tbe only one in a bankruptcy estate can convert himself into a meeting, vote himself into the chair to go on with the business, and in conclusion to appoint himself trustee. The Judge sustained the objection raised by Counsel for the debtor and cited the precedent aforesaid by the case ot Mr Alport of Christchurch, the trustee therefore appointed by the registrar (who over-ruled Mr McArdle’s action) was held as the only trustee. A survey party surveying a piece of land at Hikutai which was Crown granted 40 years ago were stopped by a mob of 60 armed men, and 30 women headed by a native assessor, notwithstanding that the party were on the highway of the County road at - the time.
